The streaming footage cut out after Mr Obama had finished his speech at 5.40pm, and was down for 30 minutes. Visitors trying to access the live video on the website missed out on seeing Mr Obama and his predecessor George W Bush embrace, before the latter then boarded the helicopter taking him out of the Capitol. The website displayed a message reading “Please come back later”, as visitors to the site also found themselves unable to watch the start of the lunch in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. A BBC spokesman said: “It was unfortunate the feed went down for a short time. There was no interruption to the live streaming during the speech however. “It was simply down to the sheer volume of people trying to watch the inauguration – although numbers are not yet available, we expect it to be a record in terms of people simultaneously accessing the stream around the world.” Almost two million people crammed onto the National Mall and along Pennsylvania Avenue to witness the swearing in of Mr Obama, America’s first black president. Over a billion watched on television and the internet around the globe. As the inauguration started, Facebook said there were millions of users logged in online. By the time Mr Obama took his oath, CNN had served more than 13.9 million live video streams of the event through its website. ( www.telegraph.co.uk )
