:ahaha:Previous works of Rem Koolhaas, a famous Dutch architect and "Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design" at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, USA, always managed to impress people but his latest work is probably the most daring and inspiring. It's called the Transformer and was designed in collaboration with Prada. The Transformer represents a pavilion that was designed with the goal of accommodating various cultural programs and functions such as art, architecture, film, and fashion. Because the famous architect doesn't always consider applying traditional methods of design and construction , his new creation literally transforms according to a specific function. The name says it all - the Transformer changes its shape for different events. Designers will construct the Transformer using a steel framed tetrahedron, which will be covered in a plastic membrane. Four different shapes make the tetrahedron: a hexagon, cross, rectangle and circle. Whether a fashion show is going to take place or a movie will be shown, the construction will be lifted then rotated on its axis and then put back down. A rectangle floor was developed for cinema; for a fashion show the Transformer will have the floor in shape of a cross and so on. Visitors will have the ability to see and appreciate the building starting with the end of March and till July 2009 in Seoul. ( www.infoniac.com )

:ayokona:Computers will freeze and drop offline with increasing regularity as the web's outdated infrastructure struggles to cope with the surging popularity of bandwidth-hungry video sites, it is claimed. Analysts are warning that the internet will cease to function as an effective tool of communication – becoming merely an "unreliable toy" for casual users – unless networks are upgraded. The Government has made universal broadband the cornerstone of its digital policy, promising that every household will have a connection by 2012. But there are concerns that a failure to commit to new high-speed networks could undermine the long-term future of the economy. Online traffic is already growing at 60 per cent a year, but Ted Ritter of Nemertes Research, a think tank, predicts demand could double in 2009, driven by increased use of video-on-demand websites. More than 180 million television programmes were watched over the internet in the first year of the BBC's iPlayer catch-up service, with rivals 4oD and ITV.com also attracting large audiences. The video-sharing website YouTube, which has helped propel Britain's Got Talent winner Susan Boyle to international fame, reportedly uses as much bandwidth as the entire internet took up in 2000.

"Today people know how home computers slow down when the kids get back from school and start playing games, but by 2012 that traffic jam could last all day long," Mr Ritter said. "For business purposes, such as delivering medical records between hospitals in real time, it's useless." Telecoms companies in Britain are already investing in new fibre-optic cables to replace the existing network of copper lines – BT has pledged to connect 10 million homes to its super-fast service by 2012, and Virgin Media is also rolling out fibre optic broadband. But it is feared that millions of homes particularly in rural areas will be left with a crawling, second-rate service as internet use explodes. Some internet service providers are planning to profit from the predicted congestion by charging websites to fast-track their content, in a move seen as compromising "net neutrality" – the principle that all web content should be transmitted with equal priority. Mr Ritter, who is compiling a report on the future on the web to be published later this year, has warned online surfers to expect "brownouts" – debilitating combinations of screen freezes and slow connections - in the near future. "At best, we see the [economic] slowdown delaying the fractures for maybe a year," he said. ( www.telegraph.co.uk )

:ayokona:Chinese hackers allegedly have been trying to break into the computer systems of the New York Police Department for some reason. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said computer hackers based in China have been making some 70,000 attempts daily. It is not clear why China would be so interested in New York's finest, but Kelly thinks it is because of his coppers' record of 'international arrests' and the fact the deparment tends to deal with terrorists since September 11. IP addresses of computers attempting to breach the NYPD's computer systems have been tracked to China, the Netherlands and the Ukraine. It appears that the hackers have devised botnets that make 5,000 attempts a day at finding unsecured portals into the NYPD's files. Chinese government officials have denied involvement in computer spying, however. China claims that people outside China are bent on fabricating lies and that the notion of Chinese hackers raiding western computer networks is all a myth. ( www.theinquirer.net )

:astig:The latest invention from researchers working at Philips Electronics is a jacket that includes vibration motors and can enable movie viewers to actually feel the movie through a sense of touch. The jacket was developed with the goal of studying the effects of touch on the emotional reaction of the viewer to what the movie characters are feeling. A senior scientist from Philips Electronics, Paul Lemmens, notes that the jacket was not created to make viewers experience the actual punches and other effects that movie characters receive. The idea is to make viewers experience the anxiety along with other emotions via specific signals. One of such signals is sending a shiver up the spine of the person viewing a film. Among other signals there are: the creation of tension in the viewer's limb and a pulse on the chest that engages a rapid heartbeat. According to Lemmens, people often cannot imagine how sensitive humans are to touch, despite the fact that touch is the first sense that fetuses develop inside mother's womb. It is worth mentioning that the scientist will present the company's latest invention at the 2009 World Haptics Conference, which will be help in Salt Lake City. The event will be sponsored by the IEEE. In order to make viewers experience emotional sensations, the jacket features 64 independently controlled actuators. These are allocated across the arms and torso. There are 16 groups of four actuators that are connected along a serial bus. Each of the sixteen groups has a microprocessor. Due to the fact that the actuators draw little current, the haptics jacket can work for up to an hours on two AA batteries, informs the website of the IEEE Spectrum magazine.

If a viewer watches a fight scene, the jacket can generate a pulsing on the chest in order to reproduce the heartbeat of the kungfu master. The speed of on and off cycling of the actuators is 100 per second. To note that it is not for the first time that Philips develops a gadget that can enhance sensation. Last year the company's latest invention was a technology that made it possible for content providers of games, movies, music and websites to create immersive experiences that one can feel in the real world by engaging specially developed amBX devices, such as lighting-effects devices and wind machines that jointly can reproduce the feeling of a gentle breeze or a bomb blast. :sobrakana:Insecurity outfit F-Secure has warned people to stop using Adobe's Acrobat Reader and switch to using an alternative PDF reader until the company sorts out its security. Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of F-Secure, told a briefing of journos that nearly half of hacker attacks this year exploited holes in Acrobat Reader, while six vulnerabilities have been discovered that target the program. He said that users would be better off with an open sauce flavour of PDF reader. ( www.theinquirer.net )

:okay:A company called Practical Solar managed to create the world's first heliostat system that is controlled by a computer. With its help the sunlight provides enough energy for heating, lighting and other purposes. The computer-controlled system takes advantage of the solar light even when it doesn't reach your house directly. One can install the heliostat system using only hand tools. The entire hard work is performed by the high-tech tracking technology software. The program regulates the focus and the angle while the sun moves. Cutting down costs and saving energy use are the two main advantages of a heliostat, which can be used to direct natural sunlight in through a window. You can also use a number of heliostats in order to reflect natural lighting into a room. When there's bright sunlight outside, one heliostat generates visible light that is equal to forty 100-watt incandescent light bulbs. In addition, the sunlight can cover an entire room in contrast to a limited range of a bulb. With the help of two heliostats one can generate about 600 watts of solar thermal energy. If a thermal receiver is added to accumulate heat then there will be enough energy to light up the house during the night. With the help of individual heliostats you can have several targets, meaning that a heliostat can be used for a variety of tasks in different times, during different seasons. You can change the targets on demand or automatically with the help of timer function. It is worth mentioning that one heliostat uses less that 1/3,000 of the energy it generates. One driver box can control 200 heliostats. More information about the company and heliostats can be found here. ( www.infoniac.com )

:astig:During the global economic crisis a cheap car is the product that will most likely attract a lot for customers. Recently the Indian carmaker, Tata Motors, presented its new car, dubbed Nano, which claims to be the cheapest vehicle in the world. According to the first journalist who performed a test drive of the car, Hormazd Sorabjee, Nano feels more expensive than it actually is. There were certain concerns over the Indian company's self-imposed price target of 100,000 rupees, which is about $1,980. Skeptics expected that the car would look more like a golf cart rather than a real vehicle. But after the first test drive, carried out in Pune (the home of the Indian carmaker), it turned out that the world's cheapest car is a vehicle than you will never feel ashamed to drive. The doors of Nano open very wide, which makes it quite easy to get in and out. In addition, the car's high seats allow the driver to slide onto them with easy. For such a price you will surely not receive the luxury of a Mercedes, but you may still highly appreciate the vehicle's front-power windows and air-conditioning. One more important feature of Nano is that it can take heavy loads, since an Indian car with five seats is usually made to be able to carry twice the weight of five passengers. Nano weights only 600kg, but it was designed to look rather robust. Its suspension can cope with virtually any kind of surface. The vehicle may even embarrass some off-road cars. Surely a car of such size as Nano has its issues, like getting a bit choppy when you drive it on uneven surfaces. There car's nose may also bob up and down. Nano has a two cylinder 623cc engine, which is rather noisy, but still not at noisy as someone would really expect from such a car. It is good for crowded city streets. Nano's top speed is 105km/h, but the vehicle runs out of puff rather quickly when you drive it on an open road. It seems that the vehicle was not developed for highways, but there's no doubt that a lot of people will still want to buy it. Engineers at Tata worked hard to make the car stable with a full load when you drive it at maximum speed. A good job is done by the brakes. It takes some time to understand that you drive an extremely cheap vehicle, since Nano neither looks nor behaves like one. The car is also very fuel-efficient - having a 15-liter tank it spends one litter to drive up to 18-20 kilometers. Nano is certainly a breakthrough. Its developers really thought about the buyer's expectations. ( www.infoniac.com )
